Freshman Year: Luis is one of just two freshman to return from last year's top 7 Panthers who were the 2017 Northern California Champions but also placed fifth at the CCCAA State Championship. Luis placed eleventh at the Coast Conference Championship and 22nd at the Northern California Championship. Luis cracked the top 100 as a freshman at the CCCAA State Championship placing 96th in 22:08.
Prior to Hartnell: Luis competed for four year at Greenfield High School. He improved steadily over his Bruin career capped with two Mission Trail Athletic League team titles and two trips to the CIF State Championship. He finished right behind current teammate Jaime Martinez with a time of 17:03 at Woodward Park. Luis also brings in a personal best 16:41 at Crystal Springs. On the track, Luis ran 4:46 and 10:29 and has some experience in the low hurdles.
"We've learned very quickly we need to do the small things better daily to keep Luis healthy. When he is healthy he trains and races with the best. He's already an all-conference performer with a solid time at Woodward Park and should be an all-region runner for us this fall if stays 100% healthy. He produced some excellent track times in a shorterned injured season but provides the foundation for success this fall. Strength will be the key for him and the more he embraces that the greater the success he will enjoy."
