San Jose State Freshman Year: Competed in three meets for the Spartans. Had a best of 27:21 for 8km at the Santa Clara Bronco Invitational.
Prior to Hartnell: Juan was a four year varsity member of the San Benito High School Balers. As a junior, he placed fifth at the league championship and 84th at the CIF State Championship in 16:29. As a senior he placed sixth at the league championship and 13th overall at the CCS Championship.
"We have been patiently been waiting to add one of our area's best runners to be eligible. After a tough start at Hartnell, Juan is starting to hit his stride. We shook off the rust from not training to start, overcame some small injuries, and now he's training consistently at a level better than any he's had in his career. He will be race rusty but I'm confident he will learn each week and be ready to content for a top 20 finish at state come November 23rd. On paper, he can run with anyone we just have to get Juan to learn that its way more fun to race 4 miles than the big jump he had a frosh at San Jose. The shorter distance should play to his middle distance strength. He's definitely a sub 21:20 type of guy but I know he wants to learn to sub 21:00 so he will just need to see how close he can start to that goal and start working daily after that to reach it."
