On February 22, 2017, the Hartnell Softball team hosted a home double-header match against Reedley. Hartnell managed to get an early 8-2 lead in the beginning of the fifth inning with Bethany Cardenas having 2 early hits and a homerun. However, Reedley managed to score 7 runs in the fifth inning, giving them a 9-8 lead. From there on, tension began to rise as the game went into extra innings. The Reedley Tigers completed the comeback behind Jessica Vegely and Lauren Costa’s two hits. In the second game of the Hartnell and Reedley match, Jennifer Lafayette wasted no time as she had two hits, bringing in 3 runs in the 4th inning, giving Hartnell a 6-0 lead. Due to extra time in the first match, the game was limited to 5 innings. The Hartnell Lady Panthers gained a 6-3 win over Reedley. The game featured Danielle Caoili’s stellar performance only allowing 8 hits and 2 strikeouts, while facing 25 batters! “We are very close coming together and putting it together,” Softball Head Coach, Andy Watt expressed. Then on February 27, 2017 the Lady Panthers hosted conference rival De Anza College earning another home win! Early on in the game, Jasmine Aten contributed 2 hits and 2 RBI’s along with Jennifer Lafayette 2 hits. Yet, most impressively, Angelina Ruiz went 4/4 with 2 RBIs! Nicole Martinez pitched the whole game facing 21 batters and only allowing 5 hits and 2 strikeouts. Hartnell prevailed with a 11-3 win at the 5th inning. However, this was also a double-header and during the second game Jennifer Lafayette got the nod as she made her pitching debut. She pitched 6 innings facing 25 batters only allowing 6 hits during the game and having three strikeouts. Coach Watt later stated, “Jennifer played well, another good pitcher we have on the staff.” Everyone got involved on the offensive side as Nicole Martinez had 2 hits and 2 RBIs, while Angelina Ruiz and Celeste Canchola also added 2 hits each. Hartnell earned a second win for the day with a 9-1 win at the 6th inning, outscoring De Anza 20-4 in the doubleheader match. “We've had a problem getting through the 5th inning, now I think we're getting past that,” Head Coach Andy Watt expressed after the game vs De Anza. Hartnell now sits 6-7 (.462) right under the 500 mark having a .306 batting average and .412 slugging Percentage. The next home game will be on Thursday March 8, 2018 at 3:00 p.m.
