Spring break kicked off with an opportunity for both the men's and women's track & field teams to show improvement much closer to home at the CSM Bulldog Invitational in San Mateo. On a very warm Friday, the Panthers emerged with two new State "A" marks and several seasonal bests.
Ivan Martinez-Galindo showed potential over the barriers and water jump at the Central Coast Challenge but used the CSM meet to secure his State "A" with a debut in the event at 9:57.84. His time was just short of the top time in Northern California by just 0.2 seconds. Frosh Diego Avila-Garcia won the 800 meters in 2:01.36 just after posting a lifetime best 53.34 in the 400 meters. Teammate Alex Acevedo ran a lifetime best in the 400 meters (52.39). Solo Kalemani cracked the 11 meter barrier with a personal best 11.21m throw. Basketball turned track athlete Nick Maher had three personal bests on the day with his team leading discus throw of 36.43 meter the highlight. Logan Bayhonan returned from injury to record a long jump mark of 6.39m. Gianni Ponce doubled nicely in the 100 meters (11.25) and high jump (1.80m). Anthony Noriega had two personal bests over 200 meters (25.08) and 400 meters (56.83).
The Panthers will send a select group at the tailend of spring break to the West Coast Relays at Buchanan High School on Friday-Saturday, March 27-28.
