Women Relay Teams Serve Notice at Chabot
Competing in the Chabot Invitational on a rare Thursday, the Hartnell College Panthers produced several important post-conference qualifying marks and individual season improvements. The women's 4x100 and 4x400 relays highlighted the meet as they move closer to representing Hartnell College at the return of the CCCAA State Track & Field Championship. The meet also gave the Panthers a chance to compete outside their comfort zone against four year university athletes.
The women's 4x100 relay team of Clodine Tabernilla, Roxana Ruelas, Isabella Reimann, and Aaliyah Carreras gave Norcal third ranked Santa Rosa JC all they could handle posting a season best and State "B" 50.24. This was the first time the quartet had passed the baton together this season pointing to a much faster time with more opportunities. Karla Herrera and Marilyn Macias joined Ruelas and Carreras on the winning 4x400 team with a season best 4:15.31. Both teams are currently ranked fifth in Northern California and will need to beat conference rival DeAnza College to potentially compete in both events at the state championship.
Roxana Ruelas improved her third ranked Norcal performance in the 400mLH with a season best 65.72. Ruelas had a previous best of 67.21 the week before. The mark is the tenth best in program history in just the fourth time Ruelas has run the event. She also met the regional provisional mark in the 100mH with a season best 17.01. After running the 4x100, Tabernilla netted a lifetime best in the 100m with 13.33. She also took over the team lead in the javelin with a toss of 27.74 (91-0). Marilyn Macias warmed up for the relay with a season best 65.51 in the 400 meters. Karla Herrera used a winning 2:27.11 in the 800 meters to get ready for her leg of the 4x400. Shantal Martinez made her 5000m debut with a provisional 20:03.46. Lorraine Mankins added a State "B" in the triple jump winning in a lifetime best 10.77m (35-4).
The Panthers will compete next in the return of the Hartnell vs DeAnza "Duel" Meet on Tuesday, April 5th. This meet has served as a great preview of the Coast Conference team battle later in the month. Field events will start at 3pm with running at 4pm.
