Torres Makes History at Mike Fanelli
Isabelle Torres wil tell anyone after her 5000m on Friday at the Mike Fanelli Classic that the long wait to compete again in a Hartnell uniform was worth it. Competing under some of the most unusual circumstances as a full-time student living in Berkeley and and attending Cal, Torres trains mostly by herself with correspondence online and through text with Head Coach Chris Zepeda. On Friday, she toed the line with the goal of becoming the second Hartnell woman ever to cover the distance in under 18 minutes. Torres would not only do that but go 17:49.02 dropping her time from the Oxy Distance Carnival by 16 seconds. The mark makes Torres second ever in Hartnell history behind fellow Salinas HS product Malena Grover who holds the program record of 17:09.72. Torres finished behind conference foe Mannat Gill who ran 17:41.88 setting up a titanic battle in the coming weeks for "Duel" meet honors and the coast conference titles at 5k and 10k.
Sofia Camacho enjoyed a historic double as well competing in the 1500 meters on Friday and 800 meters on Saturday. In the metric mile, Camacho ran 4:44.53. This is the fifth best mark in program history and sits third in Northern California. The North Salinas product now has her sights set on becoming the third woman ever to go under 4:40. On Saturday, Camacho moved to second best in Northern California in the 800 meters. Her time of 2:18.59 won her heat by four seconds showing the potential to run 1-2 seconds faster in the coming weeks. That mark eleventh best in school history. Karla Herrera was in the same heat and ran a brilliant last lap to finish second. Her time of 2:22.72 was a lifetime best and met the State "B" mark in the event. She is currently fifth in Northern California but has the better fifth ranked mark compared to Southern California.
Also competing in the 1500m and 5000m, Ashley Ochoa ran a lifetime best 5:05.30 and doubled 19:34.44. Mariah Changco attempted the double with 5:11.89 and 19:48.60. Joanna Macias ran her best 5000m ever in 19:37.82 with Faith Mora leading the group early in the race to finish at 19:41.37. Jazmin Mora was 20:15.17.
Lorraine Mankins improved on her pole vault clearing 3.22m (10-6.75) for the first time this season. She also competed in the tripl jump (10.23m/33-1). Roxana Ruelas ran her second best 400mLH (66.93).
The Panthers will enjoy a quick turnaround and compete again on Tuesday at home for one of two meets in Salinas.
