Changco's Leading Steeple Highlights Last Chance Meet
Competing for the last time at home, the Hartnell women saw several personal bests and even a regional leading mark in their final regular season meet. Sophomore Mariah Changco took over the Northern California Regional lead in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a personal best by 17 seconds with 12:07.26. The mark moves Changco, a graduate of San Benito High School, into the fifth best all-time position in the event. She is looking to become just the fourth ever sub 12 minute performer in the 3k steeplechase in Hartnell history and will have up to three more chances to achieve the feat.
Fellow sophomore Karla Herrera set a lifetime best and qualified provisional to the Norcal Championship in the 400 meters with her 62.99 clocking. Freshman Roxana Ruelas met the provisional mark in the 200 meters winning th event in 26.77. Freshman Sofia Camacho was a double winner in the 1500 meters (4:50.24) and 800 meters (2:19.59). Isabelle Torres lowered her lifetime 800 meter best to 2:28.27 and may be called upon on the event at Norcals. Competing in her first 3k steeplechase race Shantal Martinez qualified comfortably to Norcals in 12:47.53. Monterey Peninsula College transfer Daniella Ramirez used her final 5000 meter race at Hartnell to earn a berth in the Norcal Final with a personal best 20:26.01. Katelyn Strader improved on her season best in the discus throwing the 1kg out to 34.63m (113-7). Lorraine Mankins squeezed a personal best in the javelin into her busy day with an improved mark of 28.22m (92-7). Mankins was also the winner of the pole vault clearning 10-6. Isabella Reimann was the top community college mark in the hammer throw at 43.45m (142-7).
The Panthers will begin the championship portion of the season on Wednesday on the first day of the 2022 Coast Conference Championship. This year's championship will be hosted at the College of San Mateo. The long jump, pole vault, hammer, shot put, and 10,000 meters will be contested.
