Hartnell Women Second in Return of Conference Championship
The last Coast Conference Championship that the Hartnell College women's track & field team competed in was held in 2019. After dealing with the abrupt shutdown of community college athletics due to the COVID-19 pandemic, nearly a two year process to return to competition, and now finally a full season, the Hartnell women successfully placed second in conference. They enjoyed individual conference titles by Sofia Camacho, Roxana Ruelas, Ashley Ochoa and Isabella Reimann. With all four returning in 2022, the foundation and leadership of a championship team is in place.
Isabella Reimann recorded the first championship of the meet winning the hammer throw on Wednesday. On the second day of competition, freshman Ashley Ochoa kicked off the running events by taking the 3k steeplechase in a season best 12:08.73. That puts Ochoa right behind teammate Mariah Changco who was absent from the meet. The freshman from Gonzales High School also jumps over Angie Paglieri for second in the region. Shantal Martinez improved her 3k steepelchase by 11 seconds to 12:36.92 to get under the State "B" mark. Freshman Sofia Camacho won the next individual title running 4:51.58 to easily capture the 1500 meters. Roxana Ruelas also was an easy winner running her second best time of the season to win the 400mLH in 66.30.
Panthers who placed second in their event including Camacho in the 800 meters in 2:21.46 and 5000m in 19:04.13, Reimann in the discus with a toss of 36.30m and the high jump with a Norcal Provisional clearance of 1.45m (4-9.00), the 4x100 (50.66) and 4x400 (4:20.41), abd Ruelas in the 400m (61.87).
MPC transfer Aaliyah Carreras was a surprise third in the 200 meters in 26.10. That mark is the sixteenth best in school history and jumps the former Marina Mariner into the top 10 in Northern California. Roxana Ruelas picked up a third in the 100mH (17.11). Lorraine Mankins was third in the triple jump (10.21m). Isabelle Torres picked up third in the 5000 meters in 19:08.52.
In the team battle, Hartnell tallied 250 points but it was not enough to challenge this year's champion conference rival DeAnza College which had 326 points. The two colleges were the only ones to score more than 100 points.
The Panthers will compete in Day One of the Northern California Championship on Friday, May 6 at Chabot College. Events needing trials will be contested and the 10,000 meter final will take place.
