Hartnell Women Second in Norcal Meet After Day One
The Hartnell women's track & field team won back to back Northern California team titles in 2018 and 2019 and were optimistic about their chances for a three-peat in 2020 but the COVID-19 pandemic halted community college competition for two years. The 2022 Northern California Championship at Chabot College provides the women's team with the opportunity to pick up where they left off. With the heptathlon and 10,000 meters already scored, the Hartnell women are second as a team with 18 points just five behind the rival and Coast Conference champion DeAnza College.
In the women's 10,000 meter run, Sofia Camacho added an unanticipated two points by catching 36:55 performer Aslin Taylor of College of the Sequioas in a personal best 39:28.06. Teammate Isabelle Torres got the expected fouth place five points with a comfortable 40:51.05. Shantal Martinez improved on her State "B" mark with 41:29.29 and a sixth place finish along with important three points. Mariah Changco returned after missing the conference meet due to COVID and placed seventh in 42:23.95. Also competing were Faith Mora (42:56.08) in ninth, Joanna Macias (43:46.27) in thirteenth, and Jazmin Mora in seventeenth (45:27.47).
Advancing through the trials to the event final on May 13th, Sofia Camacho produced the fifth fastest 800 meter run in school history. Her time of 2:16.23 was a lifetime and season best by two seconds and moves her to second ranked in the state behind Michaela Andrews of San Jose City College. Camacho was able to defeat Norcal top ranked 1500 meter runner Hannah Hartwell of College of the Redwoods. Running in the same heat, Isabelle Torres lowered her personal best by nearly eight seconds to record a time of 2:20.89. The mark was good enough to surpass the State "B" mark and move Torres unexpectedly on to the Hartnell all-time 800 meter list. Running in the second heat was freshman Karla Herrera who chased top ranked Michaela Andrews to a lifetime best 2:21.19. Herrera has the State "B" but is still chasing the 2:20.80 State "A" to become eligible for the State Championship. Also advancing to the 800 meter final was Andrea Villegas. She ran a lifetime best 2:25.97 lowering her previous best from 2:29.11.
Roxana Ruelas advanced into two finals running 61.22 in the 400 meters and 68.89. She will go into both finals with the eighth best time. Aaliyah Carreras was a surprise qualifier into the 200 meters but surpassed that even more by running 25.85 in her trial. That mark moves her to eleventh fastest all-time in program history. She will be ranked seventh going into the final.
In the field events, Katelyn Strader and Isabella Reimann both advanced to the discus final. Strader posted a season best 36.46m/119-7 with Reimann 34.03m/111-8. Both will compete in the hammer final as well with Reimann adding the high jump and shot put. Lorraine Mankins advanced to the triple jump final with a jump of 10.33m/33-10.75. She will have a full day competing in the long jump, triple jump and pole vault next Friday. Clodine Tabernilla was the first non-qualifier in the javelin placing thirteenth with a distance of 26.45m/86-9.
The Hartnell women's team will head back to Chabot College on May 13th for the Northern California Championship final day of competition. Field events start at 11:00am with running at 3:00pm.
