Hartnell Women Close Second After Day One
Day one of the 2025 Coast Conference Championship was held at San Jose City College with the Hartnell women's team competing in five events. The women had seven top five finishes but finished trailing Coast Conference foe De Anza College heading into the second day of competition to be held at Monterey Peninsula College.
Sophomore Marissa Avelar Hernandez saw performance in the hammer improve from tenth place as a freshman to Coast Conference runner-up in a lifetime best 39.18 meters. Avelar Hernandez will now advance to the Northern California Championship as one of the top twelve women in the hammer. Hartnell also picked up a fourth place by Sofia Beltran Espino, sixth place by Jimena Ortiz Guardado, and an eighth by Isolina Barrett. In the women's triple jump, freshman Dominayah Black continued to show improvement in a new event for her. She was the bronze medalist with a lifetime best 10.52m. She was followed by Taylan Flower in fourth (10.42m) and Jenna Emerson (10.09m) in fifth. Arianna Cabrera-Noriega was the highest placing Panther in the javelin with a fifth place finish in a season best 28.00m. Daisy Andrade picked up an eighth place. Rosely Olivo lead a quartet of Hartnell women in the 10,000 meters that all picked up team points. Roselyn was third in a season best 40:08.54. Freshman Yareli Meza made her state championship eligible by running 41:12.09, a nearly four minute improvement from February. Janai Orozco placed sixth in 42:23.25 in her first attempt at the event. Freshman Alexa Flores was timed in 44:28.46, qualifying her for one more race at the distance at the Northern California Championship. Only Miriam Salinas was able to pick up points for Hartnell in the pole vault with a season best clearance of 2.20m.
The Hartnell women will now try and overtake De Anza College on Saturday in the remaining events. Field events start at 10:00am with running scheduled for 12:00pm.
